We've put together some FAQ's to help
1. How do I join?
Simple - you just have to show up. Saturday mornings are best for new joiners as there's usually a bigger group. Come running with us once and you'll want to come back...
2. Where you you meet?
We usually meet in the car-park beside DNG O'Sullivan Hurley in Ennis. It is located at the junction between the Clare Road and the Turnpike close to the Cathedral end of O'Connell Street
3. Are there subscriptions/ joining fees?
No subscriptions and no joining fees. What we do ask is that, in return for our great company, you raise funds for the Clare Crusaders clinic through some form of sponsored exercise. The main fundraising event is the Dublin marathon, but we'll take funds raised from any and all other races and other non-running activities.
During training we supply water for hydration and we do ask for a small payment once a year to cover this cost
4. How do I raise funds?
Our runners raise funds in various different ways - through sponsorship cards, by setting up a My Charity page (http://www.mycharity.ie/), or by carrying out events like coffee mornings, poker classics, quiz nights. If you plan an event like that, just let us know so we are aware of all events...
5. Where do we run?
Over the years we've developed routes in Ennis and the surrounding countryside. Routes will range from a few miles at the start of the year to the long training runs for the marathon later in the year.
6. I don't want to run a marathon but would like to run a 10K or half-marathon instead- is that OK?
Yes, it's perfectly OK not to run a marathon - it's not for everyone. Our focus is on raising funds and having fun while getting fit at the same time.
7. What happens on a typical Saturday morning run?
We usually meet at around 8am (sometimes the times will vary but we'll let you know). We will have decided a route beforehand and we talk through the route so everyone knows where they're. The we run together as a group. We don't all stick together as one group as there are varying abilities and speeds. Most people find some others at their pace and run with them. It's not competitive so there is no winning or losing...everyone who starts is already a winner!
8. Do I need special equipment?
You need a good pair of running shoes that suit your feet - that doesn't mean the most expensive! Most sports shops will be able to tell you what runners suit best. You also need a running shirt (cotton is not a good material to run in) and shorts or leggings. For ladies, a good sports bra is also recommended.
9. The thoughts of doing a marathon are a bit scary, but...
Don't worry, we won't take you out on a 20 mile run on your first day. We gradually build up the distances over a period of months until we reach our maximum training distance for the marathon. As the runs get longer we begin to rope in volunteer support crew who will drive the route to make sure everyone has water and is OK, so no-one gets left behind
10. What about other events than the Dublin marathon?
We have groups of people who get together and run events around Ireland and abroad. For the past few years, groups have traveled to spring marathons in Paris, Rome and Barcelona. Others have run in 10K and 10 Mile events around Ireland, relay marathons in Cork, half marathons in Limerick, Dublin, Cork, Dingle, Longford etc....
11.Do people run any other time of the week?
There is no formal running at the moment during the week but some people make arrangements to meet up with others during the week to go for a 10k run.
