Next Sunday morning 8 of our own don the orange vests and take to the streets of Vienna. Hopefully they’ll have time to take in the low skyline, architectural beauty and musical genius that makes Vienna the 2nd ranked “quality of life” city in the world. My forte wouldn’t lie in grand designs or musical notes so I’ve used what I know to send you on your way.
Why not try some rindsuppe, a clear beef soup usually golden in colour. For a serious protein fix have some beuschel, which is a ragout of calf lung and heart, sure to make Pat break the 3:30 and Colm the sound barrier. A wiener schnitzel is a boneless, thinned piece of meat, traditionally veal, breadcrumbed and fried. It could tickle Ann-Marie’s fancy, even the name alone!! For the baker in the group the apfelstrudle is a Nigella lip-licker. For the vegetarian in the group a palatschinken, crepes filled with spinach and cheese. If Dempsey is going all veggie then Makepeace should try a little meat-feast, the vanillerostbraten might not be one to shy away from. The hotel sacher is the home of the sachertort and a must for any chocolate enthusiast and supporter, Finola Wust. For the newest member of this group, Andreas, be warned that nicknames stick and always be weary of the cameras and a little dish of sauerkraut might just be a little taste of home.
Finally it’s with great pride that we your fellow crusaders send you, the Vienna 8, on your merry way. It goes without saying you’ll do us all proud and most importantly enjoy yourselves.
Jwalkin.
