21 miles this week...normally this would be 'it' before our marathon, but this year we carry on through...it's a strange to think that the marathon is not the ultimate goal, but it's somewhere beyond that...
It's all relative of course. Plenty of people run further and more often. We're "only" running 50K...there will be people lining up to race double that in Portumna
Only last night I was reading about the most extreme ultra runners I've ever heard of - the Tendai monks of Mt. Hiei in Japan. They go through 7 years of training...their 1,000 days or Kaihogyo...their training schedule looks like this...
Year 1: 40Km per day for 100 consecutive days
Year 2: 40Km per day for 100 consecutive days
Year 3: 40Km per day for 100 consecutive days
Year 4: 40Km per day for 200 consecutive days
Year 5: 40Km per day for 200 consecutive days
Year 6: 60Km per day for 100 consecutive days
Year 7: 84Km per day for 100 days, followed by 40Km per day for 100 days
This is not on flat modern roads, but mountain paths...and..
this is in addition to their daily duties...
Not surprising that only 46 people have completed the training in the past 130 years...although 3 people have done it twice...
Like I say, it's all relative...
